African Governments Use Advertising As A Tool Versus Media Freedom

The issue in African media freedom has a new name: advertising. Advertising is used by governments to convey their political agenda. Nonetheless, the government has agreed to produce a free newspaper explaining their policy objective after withdrawing government ads from the commercial press in recent months. Similarly, the government’s communications arm in South Africa has banned all African advertising in local media. Activists for media freedom, such as the African Union and Amnesty International, have reacted angrily to these actions.
