AEDs are used in emergencies, the call to use cannot be predefined, and are entirely dependent on the patient’s condition. AEDs are used to resuscitate people in cardiac arrest. It generally occurs when the heart’s electrical activity is disrupted, causing a dangerously fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia) or a rapid, irregular heartbeat (ventricular fibrillation). If you have any of these abnormal heart rhythms, your heart may not pump efficiently and may stop. When this happens, the brain and other vital organs may not get the blood and oxygen they need, and death can occur if not treated within minutes. The sooner a regular heart rhythm is restored, the more likely it is that permanent damage to the brain and organs can be avoided.
