In 1986, he was given the Jnanpith Award, India’s top literary honour. He went by the name Sachi Routray. In 1932, he began his literary career with “patheya,” his first work of poetry.When Routray published Baji Rout in 1943, a lengthy poem commemorating the martyrdom of a young boatman who was shot by British police after refusing to transport them in his rickety boat to cross the Brahmani River, the poem quickly gained enormous popularity among readers of Odia. He released up to twenty anthologies as a prolific poet. His poem Pratima Nayak, which depicts the pain and hardship of village life in Odisha, and his book Pallishri, which deals with this topicthe predicament of a city girl.
