The word “applique” is derived from the verb appliquer, which means “to put on”. This technique has two variations: appliqué, in which a fabric shape is stitched over a base layer, and reverse applique, in which two layers of fabric are set down, a shape is cut from the top layer, exposing the lower layer, and then both layers are stitched together. It is one of the goods for which the Indian government has conferred Geographical Indication (GI).The tradition of Lord Jagannath around the 12th century is where pipili appliqué work got its start. Earlier applique umbrellas and canopies were prepared by the Gajapatis for the annual Ratha Jatra of Jagannath.
