The gross weight of a motor carrier is the amount based on which highway usage tax (HUT), is calculated. HUT, in general, is a tax that is levied on heavy vehicles operating on public highways with a registered gross weight of at least 55,000 pounds. Trailers, semi-trailers and any other commercial vehicle are all covered by HUT.
