Designing and installing an outdoor deck was a fairly straightforward process twenty or thirty years ago. First, there weren’t many options for materials. Almost all decks were made from a few select hardwoods, such as cedar and redwood, which are naturally insect and weather resistant. Pressure-treated (PT) lumber was also available at the time, although the selection was very limited. In terms of design, it was also right. While a few people went for large, lavish or special outdoor deck designs, the guideline was to keep it basic for the most part. There was a primary surface, a railing, some steps, and of course a support frame to hold the building in place.
